April has arrived and the desert is beautiful in Spring!
April has arrived and the desert is beautiful! Spring brings so much to the desert and April is when we transition from spring into summer. After some cold nights and chilly days, everything is warming up and reaching out for the sun. Landscapes and gardens are full of color and new growth. The sun hasn’t hit white hot yet so it’s still very tolerable to be outside. We have windy days as the weather changes elsewhere and drops down our way. And all the burrowing animals are out and about now.
While our seasonal changes are much more subtle than other parts of the country, they are still evident. The sun starts to ramp up its power. The nights are getting warmer. The days are getting longer. Birds are migrating back north and filling our trees with their beautiful sounds. And lots of desert babies are being born… or hatched. The most notable is the quick flash of tiny lizards flying across the sand.
By the end of this month, it will feel a lot like summer.
As we work our way through April, summer arrives by the end of it. Some of the amazing desert plants will continue to bloom all summer. With a lot of attention, shade and water, other plants will survive until fall and rejuvenate. But any wimpy plant with soft leaves and a big thirst won’t make it to June. The sun will burn those leaves right off their stalks and leave the roots as dry as brittle bones. Gardening in the desert is not for the faint of heart but when you finally find that sweet spot, it’s great! And the secret is actually simple – it’s all about growing the right plants but I’ll leave that for another time.
What is April to me?
April is a bittersweet time for me. My show season starts in November and is over by the end March. It’s a crazy busy time and my favorite. During those months, everything I do is centered around getting my new designs to you. While things were a little different this year 😳, I was still able to see so many of you in person and it was absolutely the BEST! I know I missed a lot of you and I’m so very sad about that but I hope we can make up for it when the next season rolls around.
The bittersweet of it all is that while I’m very excited to get back in the studio to make lots of new things and have a slower pace to my days, I miss all the excitement of the shows. I continue at the Green Valley Market until about the end of May and return after Labor Day but during the hottest part of the summer, I devote all my time to the studio and it’s almost as great as show season!
What does April mean to you?
For most of the rest of the country, spring is literally a breath of fresh air after long weeks being cooped up in the house. What is your favorite part of spring? Is it the smell of new growth? The warmth of the sun on your face? The sound of leaves rustling in the wind after weeks of hearing the branches bang against each other? How about the sounds of the birds through an open window? I’d love to hear what makes April exciting for you.
What happens in April?
We’ve all heard the saying “April showers bring May Flowers” but is it true? According to the Farmers Almanac it is! The spring rains of April provide important nutrients to flowering plants.
